I think I chose the most difficult shooting discipline for the ability to practice. With my Palma (long range rifle) I have matches as far as 1000 yards away. In Washington there are only 2 ranges with 1000 yard points. One of which is Fort Lewis and civilians have been locked out of their since 9/11. The other is across the state and you can only access the 1000 yard line when there is an official match scheduled. That only happens 2-3 times a year. I do also compete with this rifle at 600 yards.

These are considered “Mid-Range” matches. Thank goodness there are many more more chances to shoot these. We have at least 4 ranges within an hour of Seattle that go back to 600 yards. But still, it has to be an official match at most ranges to use the 600 yard line also. There are always many more shooters who are practicing at the 200 yard line. For obvious reasons, shooting over there heads would not be cool. Usually you can use condensed targets at 200 yards that represent 600 yards. Unfortunately, this does not work if you want to fake a 1000 yard target. Because of the size of the black of a 1000 yard and the size of the frame it is on makes it impossible to condense. My only other option is to travel for matches.

Since this is my year to excel to the next level I am scheduling out of state matches. I will be traveling to Phoenix early February for a Regional Palma Championship. This will be shot at 800, 900 and 1000 yards. No scopes. 🙂 The match will be 3 days. I can’t wait! For the sunshine and warm weather alone I can’t wait. I plan on coming home with a few trophies.
